You can spot a really well cut garment a mile away, and that was our very first thought after seeing Éce Equestrian Co.’s knitted competition shirts, even before we knew their pattern maker Ikuyo Ishitobi worked for designer Vera Wang.

Founded in 2010 by best friends Ellen Hart and Emily Thompson, who grew up riding together in Westchester, NY, Éce was born out of a desire to create innovative athletic attire for real equestrians. Hart, a former model, and Thompson, a professional trainer/rider, combined their friendship and “equestrian fashion star” experiences and, after traveling the globe to find their dream fabric, set up shop in New York City to create the perfect high performance riding shirt.

Novelist Jane Smiley with her horses

When Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jane Smiley released her novel Horse Heaven in 2000, she was taking on a tough audience: realism-demanding equestrians. But Smiley’s intimate portrayals of horses and humans in their spider’s web of interconnected lives quickly became a horse lover’s favorite. More than a decade later, we’re still in love with Horse Heaven and her other equestrian titles: her debut novel, Barn Blind, the non-fiction release A Year at the Races: Reflections on Horses, Humans, Love, Money, and Luck, and the young adult series that begins with The Georges and the Jewels.

Jane Smiley’s work, which includes more than a dozen novels, short stories, and non-fiction, covers a broad spectrum of territory: everyone from Iowa farmwives to Hollywood insiders goes under her microscope. The resulting inspection of human personality and interaction startles, amuses, and, sometimes, saddens.

Whoops, did I say ‘human personality’? That’s not quite the whole story. Thanks to Smiley’s personal herd, readers explore the personalities of horses with unparalleled depth.

Her horses, of course, were the very first thing I asked about when I spoke with Smiley on the phone. “I’m down to four horses,” Smiley tells me. “Two geldings and two mares. They’re very cute, and they’re all Thoroughbreds.”

Some of them gain starring roles in Smiley’s writing. Others sneak in, uncredited, but very much part of the narrative. “I notice how much they get into my work, even if they aren’t named characters,” Smiley admits.

Although much of Smiley’s work is unrelated to horses, having them nearby is key to her writing. No matter what the subject, when writer’s block strikes, horses lend inspiration: “They give me a break from writing; when I’m stuck and I go over to the barn to get on a horse, it will snap into place. I’ll call my home phone and leave voice message.

“That might happen while running, but I doubt it. There’s something about relating to horses that goes beyond physical exercise.”

Letting horses speak

Horse Heaven was released in 2001 and became a national bestseller. The Washington Post summed it up: “Expertly juggling storylines, she investigates the sexual, social, psychological, and spiritual problems of wealthy owners, working-class bettors, trainers on the edge of financial ruin, and, in a typically bold move, horses.”

The sexual, social, psychological, and spiritual problems of horses?

“I am really interested in personality,” Smiley explains, “And what surprised me when I came back to horses in my forties was how much personality they had. As a teenager we think of them as living cars. Mr. T,” —Smiley’s first horse as an adult— “had this distinct personality. He had a plan. The idea that horses are carrot-and-stick beings is ridiculous. They have feelings and fears and desires.”

So horses speak, sometimes in a chapter to themselves and sometimes slipped quietly into the narrative, as in this scene after a flighty filly drops to the ground upon being tacked up for the first time:

“The four of them, groom, trainer, groom’s assistant, pony, stood around the filly in a circle, regarding her. The groom’s assistant thought she was dead. The groom thought she was a pain in the ass. The trainer thought that she was too complicated for a man whose heart was no longer really in his work, now that he had taken up golf as a sideline avocation and had a two-sixteen tee time on the resort course. The pony could not remember ever making such a big deal of anything as this filly made of everything.”

As horse-people, we casually give horses personalities. “If your horse does something peculiar, you always wonder why, and give them intention and personality. It’s just automatic,” Smiley says.

But Smiley takes conjecture to a genuine study, thanks to the advantage of watching her own horses grow up before her: orphan foals, dysfunctional mothers, and life-long behavioral characteristics that manifest themselves on the very first day of life.

“It fascinates me to engage with their personalities,” she says. Describing an underweight foal who had constant medical attention: “Her personality was shaped by early imprints by people. It’s flattering when she is interested in you, but she can always get specifically mad at you. My five-year-old is an extremely affectionate animal, dog-like, and it’s really seductive to have a horse that treats you like a dog would.” And, she notes, “When you have horses with the same bloodlines, you see nature versus nurture working itself out. Related horses have similarities.”

Individuality shines from day one. “The foals so clearly announced themselves; their own ways of doing things. There is a photo of Jackie staring off into the distance; that’s who he is — a sentinel horse. His personality announced itself the very first day. Once I’d had kids and noticed their distinct take on things, it fascinated me that horses had distinctions from the day they were born. And mares shape them. One mare was a terrible mother who spent days crying for her friends and yet cried for the foal if you took the foal away. A mom who couldn’t care about her baby until her baby tried to be independent. They were reunited later and the filly spent all of her time [with her mother]. Do not tell me horses do not have strong relationships… that was one thing I had to write about.”

In A Year at the Races, Smiley delves even deeper into personality and relationships, and again, not just of the trainers, owners, and fans, but of her horses. Jackie, the sentinel horse, gets a thorough analysis through the course of the book, as does Persey, the mare whose inattentive mother molds her into a fearful, difficult horse.

And then again, there’s the animal communicator angle. Confronted with a maiden who just didn’t seem to be extending himself in his races, Smiley, at her wit’s end, called an animal communicator to ask the colt just what his problem was.

“Did he want to win?

He didn’t know yet.

I felt this was a typical Pisces sort of conversation.”

Pleasing a picky crowd

Barn Blind, released in 1980, has flown under the radar in a manner impossible to imagine in today’s world of debut novels. Barn Blind, though critically acclaimed, was something of a writing exercise: “I tried the horse-family novel,” she says. “I was casting about for something to write about. I had not gone back into horses yet – it had been about seven years since I’d been involved with horses. I picked them because it was self-contained and it seemed like a good place to start.”

Twenty years later, a horsewoman again, Smiley wrote Horse Heaven and found her books in the hands of a whole new audience. “I was giving a reading and people were lining up, and for the first time it was squirrelly looking guys with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths,” she laughs. The racetrackers had arrived.

“I loved that book, and it’s probably my favorite,” Smiley says. So why, I had to ask, doesn’t she write more horse stories for the adult market?

“It’s a select audience,” she explains, describing a gruff horseman who admitted he didn’t trust her until he read her description of Mr. T’s conformation. “The horse audience will toss the book out of the window if the voice isn’t expert. The audience isn’t big, and they’re critical, although they’re enthusiastic when they’ve committed. Sometimes you can make it work and sometimes you can’t. It’s not an easy audience to write for.”

Instead, Smiley writes about horses for children, with her young adult series about a girl named Abby, beginning with The Georges and the Jewels. “It’s easy for me to put myself in the mind of a fourteen-year-old. She keeps her mouth closed, and that’s how I was.

“I grew up with Sweet Valley U and I wanted Abby to be more realistic than that. Abbey’s first horse doesn’t go to the Olympics! I wanted it to be about the ups-and-downs of horse ownership, and be very real.”

“Real.” That’s the one word that sums up Jane Smiley’s equestrian work best. It’s all so very real.

Mint Julep

The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, and many of those watching this historic event will be doing so with mint juleps in hand. Sounds like the perfect time to jot down a couple of notes about this classic American cocktail.

The mint julep is another of those drinks shrouded in mystery, so in an effort to clear up some of the confusion (and possibly contribute to it) I’m going to offer up some of my ideas about what makes a spectacular drink, based on my knowledge and my palate. Feel free to take or leave the following advice as you will.

Okay. Some people are going to tell you to infuse either simple syrup or bourbon with mint. Most arguments are for ease-of-use, and that’s certainly going to be the case when you’re making 500 of them. But if you’re making a mint julep at home or for a single customer, there’s really nothing easier than measuring out a little simple syrup and quickly pressing a few sprigs of fresh mint. It’s fast, it’s the freshest method possible, and next weekend you’ll be able to make yourself a whiskey sour that doesn’t taste like old mint.

You’ll hear that the perfect mint julep is straight bourbon on the rocks, garnished with a sprig of mint. You’ll also hear that the perfect martini is merely cold gin garnished with olives. Let’s discard both of these ideas, as neither is a proper cocktail but rather cold alcohol with garnish.

Hermes Winged Saddle

With the horses and riders galloping and jumping around the cross country course at this week’s Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event looking like they’re about to sprout wings, we wonder if this Hermes saddle might allow them to actually take flight?

Film Poster for Crin Blanc (White Mane)

Stunningly shot in the marshes of Camargue, France, filmaker Albert Lamorisse won the Short Film Palme d’Or Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his 1953 film “Crin Blanc.”

Crin Blanc, or White Mane, is the lead stallion of a band of wild grey horses – herds of which have lived for centuries in the Rhône delta- whose capture is sought by the rough-riding Camargue “cowboys.” White Mane’s grace and courage are noted by Folco, a young fisherman who sets out to tame him with gentler methods as they roam the grassy dunes. Their fable of freedom vs. domination transpires with few words, instead spoken mostly through a silent yet clearly discernable language between horse and boy.

Though marketed primarily as a children’s film (and re-released in 1986 with Lamorisse’s award winning “The Red Balloon”), Crin Blanc has an art house tone, with New York Times critic Terrence Rafferty stating “you sense, as in few other films, the real terrors of nature” and calling Lamorisse “one of the cinema’s best poets and a fearless explorer of the scary and exhilarating outbacks of the imagination.”

For equestrians, the 47 minutes of black and white footage of White Mane, his harem, and young Folco are simply an exquisite, indulgent equine fantasy.

The funny thing about Spring is that the weather can be sooo wildly different from one day to the next. And, temperature swings aside, there are also certain places that are just notoriously late to warm up. Take Dappled Grey’s own Pacific Northwest climate, for example. While by early May some of you will be showing off an impressive farmer tan, we’ll barely be shedding our down jackets.

In muted tones that belie the thunderous gallop, a picture perfect pony plays under sunny skies during Wellington, Florida’s polo season – held each January – April.

After not quite categorically panning HBO’s controversial series “Luck” on the basis of the first episode, I have to admit… I was warming to the series and was planning to write a follow up explaining why.

As the season progressed, the horses took a more prominent role and the show’s characters came into sharper focus. Sure, the horse scenes still lacked the realism expected by an equestrian audience, but let’s not be too picky. It’s not often we get a prime time series about the horse world, period.

Right around episode three, I saw something that really clicked. “Luck” honed in on a aspect of the equestrian lifestyle that is innately true but difficult to express: horses bring together people from vastly different worlds and give us the opportunity to develop intimate elationships with those we would likely otherwise never ever meet.  ”Luck” captured this, and for that reason I loved it.

Though its critical reception was always stronger than its ratings, the show was signed for another season and production was underway when a third contracted “horse actor” died during filming. The press surrounding the breakdown was immense and HBO promptly cancelled the show.

I’ll admit – I thought it was the right thing to do. Though the American Humane Association had given HBO high marks for its safety standards and anyone who has horses knows that accidents do happen, it just felt unacceptable and unfortunate all round.

For weeks, the press around the cancellation was overwhelming. Then, on Sunday, March 25, I awoke to a flurry of emails and texts about a front page article in the Sunday New York Times examining the dangers and death toll around US racetracks. Right under the masthead laid a full color image of a broken-down horse, euthanized on the track, with the headline “Mangled Horses, Maimed Jockeys.”

The article was as well written and researched as it was difficult to read. And one couldn’t help but think “Would this piece have made it to the front page without the media manure storm that surrounded “Luck?” The Times explored a number of issues – from performance-enhancing and pain-masking drugs to the rise of the “racino” – and ironically, these were themes central to “Luck’s” developing plot line, too.

And so I wonder – was canceling “Luck” the best thing for the welfare of the horses?  Of course, nobody thinks an animal should ever suffer or die for the sake of entertainment. But did we also lose a prime time venue for educating the non-equestrian public and creating a groundswell of support for safer sport? Without broader awareness of the inner workings of this fringe industry, will things ever improve for the 1000+ horses that break down on the track each year?

“Luck” was a tough race to call between harm and good… and either way, it seems it’s the horses that stand to lose.

Fashion forecasters have pegged white denim as a hot trend for Spring/Summer, but did you know you  this look has its roots in the sport of polo? Here’s our two favorite options for translating the “white jeans look” to the stable – or at least giving it an equestrian twist.

From London-based polo lifestyle brand Polistas, the Ladies White Polo Jean (above) are cut with a slim “cigarette” leg designed with boots (or stilettos) in mind. The denim is a 99% cotton, 1% elastine blend. ’Flat’ seams on inside, extra belt loops, and a low cut front offer comfort while riding.

Over this morning’s coffee, we learned that our day starts out not unlike that of star equestrian/heiress Georgina Bloomberg who, like us, is coming back to health from a riding-related back injury. Physical therapy, a little icepack therapy, a visit to the stables… but it’s about there that the similarities end.

The surprisingly down-to-earth Bloomberg, who according to this NYT article goes through more wardrobe changes in one day than Anne Hathaway did hosting the Oscars, has just released “My Favorite Mistake,” the sequel to her debut young adult equestrian novel “The A Circuit.”

Charlotte Casiraghi, Princess of Monaco, the New Face of Gucci

This news to emerge out of Paris Fashion Week should excite equestrian style devotees, for if Charlotte Casiraghi is like any other equestrian – and we suspect in some ways she is – the new campaigns will include not only stunning equestrian styling but beautiful images of her horses, too.

The first portrait released by Gucci, shot by German photographer Peter Lindbergh, features the elegant 25 year old Princess of Monaco lounging on a bale of bright green hay. (Good looking hay, we might add.)

Fox accessories at Burberry Fall 2012

Not a huge surprise that Ralph Lauren would channel the tweed and tailoring of English country life (a la Downton Abbey) for his Fall 2012 collection, the the equestrian stars of NYFW, in our opinion, are these foxy accessories at Burberry.

Debut Novel by Natalie Keller Reinert

If you’re looking for a new equestrian author to fall in love with, Dappled Grey has a tip for you! We’ve become overnight fans of Natalie Keller Reinert after reading her debut novel “The Head and Not the Heart.”

A lifelong rider, Reinert’s writing oozes with equestrian authenticity (an absolute must for equestrian fiction), and against this credible backdrop “The Head and Not the Heart” follows a young female trainer who is questioning the lifestyle tradeoffs that are fundamental to a life with horses. If you’re an equestrian who’s ever had a case of the “what if’s?”  - and let’s face it, who hasn’t? – then this book is for you.

Reinert’s voice is unique enough that we’re reticent to make comparisons, but fans of Sara Gruen’s popular Flying Changes and Riding Lessons will similarly enjoy and identify with “The Head and Not the Heart’s” tough, determined, and talented female equestrian lead.

But if Gruen’s character confronts Baby Boomer dilemmas (divorce, a rebellious teenage daughter), Reinert’s feisty yet fatigued “Alex” struggles with decidedly Gen X temptations – a less physically demanding, more intellectually stimulating career in a creative field, access to the hip social scene that big city living affords. As Alex grapples with the path her life is taking, it’s hard not to do so along with her and… well, you’ll have to read the book to find out where she ends up.

It’s always exciting to discover a fantastic new author and we’re already craving what’s next from Natalie Reinert  - and from what we hear, she has a few other equestrian titles in the works. You can also follow along with her Retired Racehorse Blog.

It started with harnesses and girth belts, and now, on the runway for Herve Leger’s Fall 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week, the designer of the iconic bandage dress has “gone bondage” with “bridle like” bodywear.

The fashion spreads for Spring 2012 are hitting the stands and we love the irony in Herve Leger, creator of the so-called “bandage dress,” incorporating an equine into the Spring campaign. Consider it our own little equestrian fashion inside joke. Wink wink.

PS – Herve Leger stayed continued to look to the tack trunk for inspiration for the Fall 2012 collection, showing these bridle and harness adorned looks.

Students of equestrian style, take note: the extensive couture and equestrian collections of the original AT, American fashion icon Ann Bonfoey Taylor, are on display at the Phoenix Art Museum from February 27 – May 29, 2012.

Muse of the great Givenchy and the inspiration behind Michael Kors’ Pre-Fall 2012 collection, Bonfoey-Taylor was a member of the US Olympic ski team, a World War II flight instructor, skiwear designer, equestrian, wife, and mother.

For unable to attend the exhibit, there is also an accompanying book “Fashion Independent: The Original Style of Ann Bonfoey Taylor.” Style.com also does a nice pictorial biography here.

Our favorite, the “Bubblegum Horses” are printed on 1920′s antique paper from the famous Parisien magazine “La Petit Illustration,”  a weekly French literary journal. Coco adds the ink print horses and hand-painted bubblegum.

Each 7.7″x 11.6″ print is signed by the artist and is shipped in a waterproof sleeve and sturdy cardboard mailer for shipping from Paris.

As much as we’d like to fall in love with an equestrian-themed television series, we don’t think HBO’s “Luck” is going to be the one.

The series pilot (Episode 1) has been critiqued elsewhere as long on character development, short on plot. We concur and, while denizens of the track are typically a real lot of characters, the opening episode left us wondering whether we cared what happens next.

The most appealing part of the track, for us anyway, is the horses and Luck does offer lots of long Thoroughbred legs and spectacularly-shot racing footage. (There’s also some inaccuracies in the horse scenes that an equestrian watcher will surely spot.)

The least appealing part of the track (again, for us) is the betting, and this, unfortunately, is where “Luck” casts the bulk of it’s attention.

Two of racings most photogenic jockeys, Gary Stevens and Chantal Sutherland, lend an air of authenticity to an already impressive cast, including Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, Richard Kind, Nick Nolte, Jill Hennessy among them.

Let’s just say we were intrigued enough to plan on watching Episode 2, but there are a few areas where we hope  - but aren’t confident – “Luck” will improve:

Though the track has always been a man’s world, there are many women that earn their living on the backside – as trainers, vets, exercise riders, and jockeys – and we hope “Luck’s” female characters will play more than a peripheral role.

And, from it’s opening sequence, “Luck” pivots on the notion of the horse as a redemptive force in man’s world. Romantic and appealing as that notion is, we’re not as comfortable with the horse as pawn as “Luck’s” producers may be.

Interested viewers beware, Episode 1 includes a graphic mid-race breakdown scene with an audible snap. We apologize for the spoiler, but we know it’s one  a lot of equestrians appreciate.

“Luck” airs on HBO on Sundays at 9pm.

Sonora Carver at New Jersey's Steel Pier

Forget the Hollywood version, get the real story from the original diving horse rider herself. According to the Press of Atlantic City, the tourism board has just voted to bring back the legendary horse diving acts to the Steel Pier as part of a $20M Tourism District Master Plan.  A Girl and Five Brave Horses is the autobiography of Sonora Carver, the daring young equestrian and “diving horse girl” of the Steel Pier, about whom the popular film “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” was based.

If you’re the free-spirited type of equestrian that liked the needlepoint horse chair, then you’ll probably also fall in love with Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers’ “Prickly Chairs” – a fun juxtaposition of classic French Louis XV lines with a colorful Mexican textiles.

The look of the week goes to World Dressage Masters veteran and crowd favorite Anja Ploenzke, who delighted the fans in Wellington not only with her spirited freestyle aboard Le Mont d’Or, but also her daring fashion choices.

In-house spectators and the Internet audience alike were abuzz over Anja’s blue Alessandro Albanese tailcoat, with its pink trim and vest points and bold belt.

One of 3 (out of 8) riders to wear a helmet during the kur, Anja’s distinctive helmet is made by Uvex, a German maker of protective headwear for equestrian and road sports. While Anja wears the fp 3 elegance cc, Uvex also made headlines as the company behind the gold helmet famously worn by Isabell Werth last year.

In a sport where forward is everything, it’s not only Anja’s fashion that is leading edge – she finished 2011 leading the WDM rankings as well.

Jes Maharry Sun Horse Cuff, $528

One could argue that the jewelry of artist Jes Maharry is all heart. A staple of Sundance, Maharry works out of her studio/wayward farm animal sanctuary  and is a favorite for her “elegantly bohemian” designs, quite often featuring the equines and other creatures at her Southern California ranch.

The sterling silver Sun Horse Cuff – horsey, a little hippie, and almost hieroglyphic – is one of Maharry’s signature pieces, designed 15 years ago and still just a beautiful today.

A little Valentine inspiration, perhaps? This is one piece that would be perfect the other 364 days too.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

The first human artists drew horses, filmaker Werner Herzog show us in his riveting documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.”

In his deliberate and German-accented monotone, Herzog narrates as he and a 3 person crew, granted special access by the French minister of culture and outfitted in spelunking equipment, carefully explore the Chauvet Caves of Southern France. Chauvet is the site of the oldest known pictorial creations of humankind, dated at a minimum of 32,000 years old.

Sealed off by a landslide some 25,000 years ago, the caves at Chauvet are a time capsule of prehistoric man and beast. As filmaker, Herzog uses the contraints of the cave – pitch darkness, restrictions on lighting by preservation statutes, and a limit of several hours of access due to near-toxic levels of radon and carbon dioxide - to forge a connection between the viewer and the ancient cave artists, at times recording only the heartbeats and breath of the crew while cameras study the paintings.

With a limited crew, Herzog handles the lights during filming in the cave.

The Chauvet painters created images of that which was important to their daily life – hunted prey such as horses, cattle, and reindeer  and predators like Cave lions, panthers, bears, owls, and Cave Hyenas. Surprisingly, the paintings reveal rhinoceros as part of the landscape, too. Interspersed with footage of exploration of the cave, Herzog includes interviews with experts who touch on the interrelationships between early man and these creatures.

The Chauvet art is distinct both for being the oldest and also the techniques of the artists which utilize the coloration and topography of the walls for three-dimensional effect. Equestrians will most enjoy the intricacies of the horse paintings, imbued with grace and expression through a combination of stone etching, charcoal, clay, and sepias. Of the cave art, Picasso has famously said “They invented everything.”

Though their predatory relationship with the horse was much different, the Chauvet painters also clearly found them beautiful, joining breath and heartbeat as another connection we share with our 30,000 year old ancestors.

The Cupcake Jump at WIHS

We all know that things behind the scenes at a horse show can get pretty stressful and apparently the same is true when you’re the bakers charged with making a cupcake jump for the Gambler’s Choice Costume Class at the Washington International Horse Show.

Flipboard is an iPad app (though it’s available on the iPhone and desktop, too) that allows you to flip through your favorite publications in an easy to peruse “social magazine” format. A publication’s latest content from Facebook, Twitter, and their RSS feeds appear in a beautiful print-style layout, with a finger swipe used to move through the “pages.”

If you received an iPad over the holidays or haven’t yet discovered Flipboard, we highly encourage you to download this app. Dappled Grey is available on Flipboard too and we daresay it looks quite lovely!

2011. How to describe it? From an equestrian’s point of view, “resilience” comes to mind as the defining word.

There was elegance, joy, and beauty, too, as there always is with all things equestrian. But it was the stories like cowboy Buck Brannaman’s salvation from a childhood of abuse in the movie “BUCK,” lionhorse Neville Bardos’ rescue from a burning barn and triumphant finish at the Burghley Horse Trials, Olympian Eric Lamaze’s courageous comeback after the unthinkable loss of Hickstead, and even War Horse’s fictional Albert and Joey (above) that punctuated the year with an unrelenting reminder of the depths of spirit contained in and required by the equestrian lifestyle.

As they always do, these triumphs and tragedies remind us to cherish what we have. Care for it, celebrate it, revel in it. And when it is time to let it go, turn to those who share this passion for the equestrian lifestyle. Around the globe, as this year showed, we live this life together.

Guilty pleasure: Tween riders, pony moms, and equestrians of every age followed along as Georgina Bloomberg took us on a sensational/disturbing “fictional” tour of teen life on “The A Circuit.”

Fallen Hero: Small in stature but a giant of international showjumping, the great Hickstead passed away in the arena at Verona, prompting an outpouring of love and support from equestrians around the world. No tribute was more moving than that of Hickstead’s hometown ring crew at Canada’s Royal Winter Fair, who donned black Hickstead armbands and performed a quiet and moving ceremony.

What a gamut, then, of trends, tragedy, and triumph that we shared in 2011?! With you, wherever you read Dappled Grey, we toast the incredible equestrian life that unites us and makes the world somehow a smaller place. And we wish you a very happy new year!

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas And All Through the Barn…

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the barn,
All the creatures we sleeping, all safe, snug and warm.
The feed pails were hung by the stall doors with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas would soon be there.

The ponies were nestled all warm in their beds,
While visions of carrot cakes danced through their heads.
The Arabs, the Thoroughbreds and even the Apps,
The jumpers and hunters were all taking naps.

When out in the paddock there arose such a clatter
I awoke in my stall to see what was the matter.
I moved to the window quick as I could
To see where the noise came from, if I could.

The sight I beheld as I gazed out that night
Was a beautiful horse all whiter than white.
He wore a red blanket so nice to behold,
His hooves how they sparkled all glittery gold.

With swift certain motions to our barn he came,
And silvery moonlight danced from his mane.
More rapid than racers his hoof beats they came,
And he neighed and he snorted and called us by name.

He was our Christmas, a ghost-horse of white,
Who has come to all horses, since that one special night.
A gallant example who served man so well,
Especially those with whom a baby did dwell.

For those special horses who shared stable and stall,
To give comfort and warmth to the Savior of us all.
Now thinking of them, he entered the door,
To distribute among us his gifts and more.

Down the aisle he came, his hoof beats so light,
And he stopped by each stall in our stable that night.
Gifts he did give to all in our barn,
More heart or more courage, or to be free from harm.

He spoke not a word but went straight to his work,
And he filled all the feed pails then turned with a jerk.
And nickering softly on gold hooves so bright,
And giving a nod he went into the night,
And I heart him neigh as he went out of sight…

Jonathan Adler Horse Ornament

Celebrity designer Jonathan Adler is everywhere these days. Originally a potter, and the originator of so-called “happy chic,” Adler’s designs can be found from Barney’s to Barbie’s “real” Malibu Dream House and seemingly everywhere in between.

FITS Wind Pro Stud Jacket

The good people at FITS refer to the Wind Pro Stud Jacket as the “Studly.” Cute, huh?  But we’ll just stick to calling it the jacket we’re never taking off.

Designed as a mid-layer, but perfectly suitable as an outer layer in mild conditions, the Wind Pro Jacket has been in the FITS rotation for a few years, but received a facelift this season with the addition of antique nickel studs accenting the stand-up collar. Voila! A basic staple takes a stylish  - and, yes, studly – turn.

The fit on this jacket is just right – ample sleeve length and a slimming, not boxy, silhouette. The Wind Pro fabric offers our favorite combination of warmth, washability, and dirt/hair/muck resistance, while the powermesh underarm gussets provide flexibility and venting.

The Hermes Scarf: History & Mystique by Nadine Coleno

With equestrian-themed scarves showing up everywhere this Fall (see versions at fashion retailers like Nordstrom, ASOS, and Miss Selfridge), we thought it was time to once again brush up on the history of a classic equestrian style.

Coveted, collected, admired, and often imitated, the House of Hermes is the original home of the iconic equestrian scarf.

And in this beautiful coffee table book, “The Hermes Scarf: History & Mystique,” art and fashion writer Nadino Coleno explores the history of the Hermes scarf, which first debuted in 1937,  as well as the painstaking craftsmanship involved with the creation of the over 2000 Hermes scarf designs.

Selected from seven decades of styles, ranging from classic equestrian to more contemporary prints, the book’s 292 illustrations are a feast for the eyes of both avid collectors and mere admirers of Hermes scarves. One of the UK’s top equestrian retailers has put out a riding jacket style that is sure to turn heads and get tongues wagging – an all white riding jacket. Now, she’s sharing her equestrian fashion sense with other enthusiasts.

A polo match with champagne bars, food trucks, A-list celebrities… we must be in Los Angeles!

Over 4,000 spectators turned out on Saturday for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, a benefit hosted by Rachel Zoe and Nacho Figueras to benefit the Will Rogers State Park in Pacific Palisades.

Actress Camilla Belle tossed out the ceremonial first ball at the polo classic, Zoe showed off her new baby, and celebs like Jeremy Piven, Lauren Conrad, and Zoe Saldana cheered on the ponies. At the end of the day, Figueras’ Team Black Watch took home the cup.

Riding Jackets from the Mid-Late 18th Century

I am often asked: “Who designed the first hunt coat?” or “What is the origin of riding jackets?” The short answer is nobody knows… for sure.

What we do know is that the coats worn in the hunter/jumper discipline evolved from the jackets worn by fox hunters. We also can be fairly certain that hunt coats were born in England in the very late 1600’s and worn regularly from the early 1700’s.

From Fantasy to Simplicity

Fashion in the period 1750–1795 in European and European-influenced countries reached heights of fantasy and abundant ornamentation, especially among the aristocracy of France. But a long-simmering movement toward simplicity and democratization of dress under the influence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the American Revolution led to an entirely new mode and the triumph of British tailoring following the French Revolution.

By 1790, fashions began to be simplified, influenced by Englishwomen’s country outdoor wear and neo-classicism. By 1795, the traditional riding habit consisted of a tailored jacket like a man’s coat, worn with a high-necked shirt, a waistcoat, a petticoat, and a hat. Frequently the jacket and a false waistcoat-front were made as a single garment, and later in the period a simpler riding jacket and petticoat (without waistcoat) could be worn.

Another alternative to the traditional habit was a coat-dress called a joseph or riding coat- thus “redingote” (French pronunciation of the English: “riding coat”), usually of unadorned or simply trimmed woolen fabric, with full-length, tight sleeves and a broad collar with lapels or revers. The redingote was later worn as an overcoat with the lightweight chemise dress.

Coats were generally made by tailors (rather than seamstresses who made women’s dresses), and thus were constructed like men’s wear. There were a variety of sleeve treatments, including cuffs, flared end, and mariniere sleeves. Pockets could be functional or false.  Early styles had simple or no collar, while later deep revers and high collars were popular.  Waistcoats could either be separate garments or a false front sewn into the jacket.

A wide range of colors was visible.  If the coat was intended primarily for riding or hunting, it was often red, navy, or green.  Coats meant more for fashionable wear could also be in other colors- blue, brown, beige, yellow, and even white were popular.  Fabrics were usually wool or a wool/silk blends.

Riding coats were long worn as functional dress, but in the second half of the 18th century, they became fashionable attire as well.  In addition to riding and hunting, they were worn for traveling, walking, visiting, and at home wear.

So how does this show up in modern equestrian style? Traditionally, the hunt seat rider dresses conservatively. Classic attire for hunter classes consists of beige, tan or gray breeches, a white or light pastel shirt, and a black, navy, gray, “hunter” green or dark brown hunt coat.

In recent years, patterns such as pinstripes, faint plaids or herringbone that appear solid from a distance, are growing in popularity. In some places, particularly breed-specific shows where tradition is not as steeped, different colors of jackets and shirts are often seen.

Here at O’Shaughnessey we strive to honor traditions yet introduce an element of whimsy in our designs and choice of linings and ornamentation. One essential element of the traditional hunt coat that hasn’t changed in some 300 years: quality wool- a durable, comfortable fabric. While lesser-cost wools are available from Asia, we use only lightweight Portuguese and Italian wools that have the texture and structure critical to a lasting look.

As a look back through history indicates, the riding jacket- and the lifestyle of the equestrian – have clearly evolved, but retains a core look and style that still resembles its ancestors.

Born and raised in California, Sara Griot learned to sew when she was 9. She pursued design as a career after an art and design degree, and soon created her own clothing under the label “Sara McNamara”. Her line was sold in numerous boutiques across the country as well as in department stores such as Nordstrom, Saks, Garfinckel’s and Macy’s. Her clothing was featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Women’s Wear.

Sara has returned to the design world making hunt coats and show shirts focusing beautiful fabrics and trims. Her designs combine function and fit with a splash of stylish detail, all designed with the competitive equestrian in mind.

The leather tall boot has gotten a makeover as of late, with non-traditional colors, patent or lizard tops and trim, and even crystal accents.

But what about the riding boot’s primary accessory – the spur strap? We’re not talking about a little bit of bling on the buckle.

Fans of showjumping who dream of having behind the scenes access to the sport’s top rider athletes should put a trip to the Fidelity Jumper Classic, September 14-18 in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, on their calendars.

This Thursday evening’s “Elite Shavings Meet & Greet” is a unique Jumper Classic tradition, transforming the usual riders’ press conference into a rare opportunity for local barns, media, families, and children alike to meet and ask questions of Olympic and World Cup riders such as McLain Ward, Kevin Babington, Kent Farrington, and Victoria Birdsall.

The annual event, now it its fourth year, usually draws several hundred people to the SmartPak Equine Rider’s Tent for Q&A, hors d’oeuvres, and beverages next to the grand prix field.

While last year’s Meet & Greet included the unveiling and signing of the “Sapphire” Breyer horse model, this year’s event will feature an author and rider signing of “Unbridled Passion,” Jeff Papows’ exciting new book about the relationships between contemporary showjumping’s greatest horse and rider pairs. (Read Chapters 2 & 3 about Ian Millar and McLain Ward.)

Dappled Grey talked briefly with Papows, an accomplished software industry executive who is the former President and CEO of Lotus Development Corporation, about the inspiration behind the book.

DG: Why do you think it is important to tell the story of the horse and rider pairs?

JP:  What the horses do for us out of love, and generosity in the sport is nothing short of magic and it needs to be understood, they deserve to be memorialized in that way.  The riders made lifelong sacrifices you don’t see even in other professional sports, they are heroes and such great role models for our youth it’s important their dedication be understood.

DG:  Is there a particular pair of story that inspires you most personally?

JP:  They all do but if I have to pick two Ian Millar and Big Ben, because of Ben’s off the field as well as on the field heroics and Ian’s incredible ten consecutive Olympiad appearances and McLain and Sapphire because McLain is one of my best friends and because I’m so proud of both him and Sapphire and their talent is truly beyond simple description.

DG:  You have a unique background. What has being an equestrian brought to your life that other accomplishments haven’t?

JP:  It’s true my background is different and I’ve accomplished a lot in my life, particularly in business.  My equestrian career and life with horses has taught me humility, gratitude and kindness I’m sure I would not possess without my life with horses and that has benefited every facet of my life.

DG:  Do you have plans to write any other horse books?

JP:  This is my third book the first two being business best sellers.  The plan with the Unbridled Passion books is to do three volumes, the first Stars of North America, the second – Legends the historic people who built the sport like George Morris or John Whitaker, the third book – International stars such as Rodrigo Pessoa, Ludgar Beerbaum etc.  Of course it will depend on the reception the first volume receives, each book is an incredible work load, though with these books it’s been a labor of love.

For riders, the ability to get a close-to-custom look from off-the-shelf field boots is nothing short of a modern marvel. With the top price point for the upper-end, show-quality styles set at around $900, it’s an option that provides clear savings over fully custom boots. The downside? Durability is the most frequent customer complaint about virtually all custom-look tall boots.

Long before Kate Moss wore wellies to Glastonbury, long before everyone had custom (or custom-looking) tall boots, long before half chaps were the default schooling attire… there were rubber riding boots.

And recently, we’ve been asking ourselves, why not bring them back? This English country staple exemplifies classic and functional equestrian style.

Keep in mind, most rubber riding boots lack the warmth of a more sophisticated Wellie (with two notable exceptions below). Well, if you’ve spent much time at all around horses you know that they are equalizing, liberating, and empowering and young girls who learn to work with horses don’t need anyone to do their homework for them (or anything else for that matter). Horse girls specialize in doing things that are hard and – news flash! -young girls that can handle a 1000+lb  animal are the prettiest girls of all.

Anyway, we’re not sure where the idea for this  ”I’m Too Pretty…” poppycock came from, but we will offer a few fine equestrian rebuttals. Girls’ horse shirts that are appropriate and uplifting!

We saw a similar horsehead on Modcloth a few months ago, but it has seemingly sold out. So, Z Gallerie is up next with this glossy white resin horsehead.

Royal equestrian Zara Phillips is continuing her non-traditional ways by following up her weekend wedding to rugby player Mike Tindall with a quick return to work, rather than a relaxing honeymoon holiday.

Tindall returned to training camp and Phillips is preparing for the upcoming Gatcombe Horse Trials, as well as launching her colorful new ZP176 children’s equestrian line for Musto on Tuesday.

Phillips, who will continue to use her maiden name, and Tindall blogged a cute interview for Musto here.

Once reserved for horses and well, fetishists, the harness was adopted by pop stars and now – according to the New York Times – has gone mainstream. Leave it to the NYT to do a scholarly examination of The Harness as a Fashion Statement.

Pared down from the three frontrunners in our 2010 “best polo shirt” post, we took a tip from a reader and are now devotees of the Under Armour Core Solid Polo.  From show ring to schooling and on jumpers, eventers and dressage riders, we’re seeing a lot of this shirt – for good reason.

First off, it’s the fit. Designed for golf, the Core Solid has a great range of shoulder motion and is also long enough to tuck in. The fabric does a fantastic job of wicking away moisture and is anti-microbial and SPF 30.

Sure, the styling is a little more work horse than show horse. Find something else for fashion; stock up on these to ride.

One part show shirt, one part polo – riding shirts are riding on the tails of show coats to get more technical. We’ve spied these shirts quite a bit in the international Grand Prix ring – on the likes of stylish lady riders like Penelope Leprevost and Ashlee Bond – and are now seeing them increasingly around the show circuits here in the US. The basic idea is to take the formal look of a show shirt but give it the performance and comfort of a polo. Raised collars and plackets lend the traditional formality while breathable, stretch fabrics allow for movement. And lest you think that short sleeve show shirts were a relic of the 80′s, the hybrids are bringing this equestrian fashion styleback. We have yet to try any of these shirts but here’s a few we have our eye on.

Dive into the weekend early Saturday am at the Saratoga Race Course.  Just a short hour’s drive away from Manchester, by early August the Saratoga racing season is well underway. The oldest organized sporting venue of any kind in the United States and home to the Travers Stakes, the oldest major Thoroughbred race in U.S. history, the Saratoga Race Course is reserved for elite Thoroughbreds – only the best runners in the world are stabled here.  Widely considered the most beautiful racetrack in North America, it was recently named among the “Top 20 venues of the 20^th century” by Sports Illustrated.

We recommend the longstanding tradition of Breakfast at Saratoga to watch the horses work. The cool mountain air, early morning fog, and trainers at the rail clocking their horses make for a memorable scene.  A buffet breakfast is served every day from 7 am to 9 am. Admission is free (except on Traver’s Day) and the breakfast buffet is priced at $14.95 for adults and $7.95 for children under-12.  It’s key to get there early so you can also participate in a guided tour of the Backstretch stabling area, including Paddock Show and Starting Gate Demonstration, free of charge.   If you wish to attend the afternoon’s races, there will be an admission upon re-entering the track.  Like many racecourses, smart attire for men and women is required for the clubhouse and paddock areas.

Sunday at the Grand Prix

Sunday, check out the action at New England’s largest hunter jumper competition, the Vermont Summer Festival Horse Show, which runs from July 6^th through August 14^th, 2011 in East Dorset, Vermont.  Pristine, peaceful views of the Green Mountains serve as the backdrop to six weeks of top equestrian competition in one of the most beautiful areas of New England. Offering more than $750,000 in prize money, it is the richest sporting event in the State of Vermont, and attracts Olympic medalists and international course designers.  Spend a ‘Grand Prix Sunday’ at the show… with one of their famous iced mochas in hand, relax watching horse and human competitors square off against one another for the top prizes.

Nearby towns of Manchester and Dorset are quintessential New England: quaint clapboard homes, charming country inns, and cozy taverns as well as the famous Manchester Designer Outlets including Kate Spade, Theory, Armani and Ralph Lauren.  Horse show dads may enjoy the Orvis Flagship for fly-fishing and hunting equipment and classes.  Another must see in August is the show of Lisa Cueman’s beautiful black and white equestrian art photography at the Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester, a lovely museum in a spectacular setting.

Eat/Stay

To fuel up for the day, the best breakfast in town is Up For Breakfast which has even the most die-hard night owls climbing the steep stairs on Saturday mornings…  We’d recommend the Huevos Rancheros, pancakes, and the morning glory muffins!

After a day’s work, for dinner, go haute mexi casual at Gringo Jack’s or quintessential Vermont at the Dorset Inn (request the Tap Room)…  although a simple little tavern in farm country, it’s regularly spoken of in the New York Times so don’t be surprised to see local celebrities such as Jennifer Connelly dining there.

The best place to stay is the Equinox Resort.  Then you won’t have far to go after enjoying the fabulous outdoor fire pit for drinks and celeb-rider spotting – a hopping late evening destination for the horse show who’s-who.

Monday at Shelburne Farms

Monday morning, head north a couple of hours through the majestic Champlain Valley to visit Shelburne Farms, a 1,400-acre working farm, national historic site and nonprofit environmental education center located on the shores of the glittering Lake Champlain. Built in the 1880’s by the Webbs, it is a magnificent property with a 100 room Queen Anne mansion, that is now an inn and a magnificent breeding barn, built in 1891, that was once the country’s largest open-span structure.

Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch along the shores of Lake Champlain near the Farm Barn.  There are lots of activities to enjoy as well, including lake swimming, tennis, canoeing, croquet on the back lawn and ample opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking, sailing, tennis, and golfing – all on the grounds of the estate.  The moonlit campfires are the most fun as you listen to ghost stories while sitting around a campfire on a warm summer evening….

Raised in North Carolina, riding and showing horses, by an entrepreneurial Dad, combining horses and business was a natural extension of what Daphne Markcrow grew up with.  OUGHTON started with the tacktrunk bag, which she made for herself to organize tack when shipping horses from her farm, by herself, without a groom.  Quickly many of her horse show friends wanted one too.  So, without any idea of how to produce them in volume, Markcrow  had several ‘sold.’  The lucky coincidence was the materials used – the waxed canvas, because of its strength, patina’ed look, and breathability – turned out to be the perfect fabric for bags and luggage.  The iconography of the halter squares developed because, while waiting for a mare to foal, Markcrow cut the brass off the old rotten leather straps and soon had several trashcans worth… She credits a “happy organic evolution” that pulled her in and continues to almost go under its own locomotion as she also stays busy with two kids under the age of four, show horses, and more.

A young Grand Prix rider travels abroad and is forever altered by the contrast between the riches of showjumping and indescribable poverty in many developing countries. She looks to the world she knows – the international riding community – and creates a way for riders to become ambassadors that educate and inspire the larger equestrian community of horse owners, competitions, and equestrian manufacturers.

The next thing you know, 10,000 lifesaving mosquito nets, made from Horseware Ireland’s fly sheet fabric, are donated to Cambodian families living in the slums of  Stung Mean Chey and Borey Keila.

This oversimplified chain of events belies the tremendous work being done by JustWorld International, its 400 international Rider Ambassadors, and corporate partners like Horseware Ireland, but also exemplifies the power of a passionate network to create a better world.

Since 2005, Horseware Ireland’s Tom and Carol MacGuinness have taken a lead-by-example approach to corporate social responsibility in the equestrian market through their increasing involvement and support for JWI. Horseware’s recent commitment of $25,000, paired with a $10,000 donation from equestrian humanitarian Maria Newman, will build a new, three-story school at JustWorld’s project site in Stung Mean Chey.

The new school will join two other JustWorld-operated schools in Cambodia, where 600 students receive instruction in English, Khmer, math, and traditional Khmer culture – free of charge. In addition to education, the schools provide clean water and basic nutrition to extremely poor families who otherwise have almost no resources.

“Working with our partner in Cambodia, the People’s Improvement Organization, our goal is to continue providing education, basic health care, nutritional support, and life-skills training,” says Jessica Newman, Executive Director of JustWorld International.

In addition to donating funds for the school’s construction, Horseware Ireland will also contribute to the school’s vocational sewing program. More than 10,000 people live in the slum at the Stung Mean Chey municipal garbage dump and acquiring vocational skills provides an alternative to scavenging for food in order to feed themselves and their families.

Horseware’s MacGuinness has traveled to Cambodia on several occasions and has seen first-hand the difference that JustWorld’s work makes in the lives of those it serves to help.

“Year after year, we continue to be amazed by the incredible work JustWorld is doing in Cambodia as well as its other project sites, “ says MacGuinness. “I have seen the impact that JustWorld has had first-hand, and I am thankful that we can play a role in bringing hope and a brighter future to children and families in need.”

When researching different options for your riding vacation, begin narrowing you’re your choices by thinking about what type of vacation you are seeking. Are looking for an American ranch, an exotic, international safari or a relaxing spa escape that allows you to ride as much or little as you choose? Geography and pricing will help you narrow your scope, as will the other members of your travel group.

Training Trips

A training trip is a great way to improve your riding skills or work on a specific discipline, whether its dressage, eventing, cross country, hunt seat, jumper training or Western pleasure. There are specific training trips for beginning riders, kids, as well special clinics and training trips to help more advanced riders gain confidence.

Progressive Rides

Progressive rides may include inn to inn rides, camping trips or village to village treks, where you ride to and stay in different inns, campsites and destinations every night. There are many popular progressive rides in Alberta, Ireland and Iceland. Many ranches, family run stables or resorts are set near national parks, forests or ancient trails, whether its Italy, Spain, Wyoming or Australia. These trips allow you to cover a lot of ground and can be a challenging, exciting way to discover a new destination. The trail riding world is your oyster.

Pack Trips

Pack trips venture into the wilderness and can range from a one or two nights to a couple of weeks. It is essential to pack lightly on these trips, since a horse or pack animal will be carrying your stuff. Your outfitter can tell you the exact dimensions and weight for your gear. Pack trips are a great way to enjoy camping out under the stars and allow you to travel to pristine natural areas. A pack trip can be a progressive ride, but may also take you to a set camp. On a pack trip, you may learn wilderness skills, view wildlife and truly get away from it all.

Ranches

A ranch is a great family or solo vacation destination, whether you travel to a working ranch or a dude ranch to relax and enjoy the old West. There are lots of options for ranch vacations across the United States and around the world, ranging from rustic working ranches to more resort oriented ranches, where you can horseback ride, but also enjoy being pampered. Look for a ranch that will match your individual or group needs. South America’s estancias offer gaucho culture, so that you can get to know South American cowboys and enjoy unique, international cuisine. Some ranches feature special equestrian activities such as barrel racing, cattle drives or roping and focus on bettering your riding skills while others focus on trail riding. Check out opportunities for nearby sightseeing, swimming, fishing, cooking and other activities to satisfy your family or group of riders and non-riders. Many solo travelers flock to ranches for the close-knit, easy going atmosphere, as well as special theme programs.

Resorts

Many resorts now include horseback riding as an additional activity for as the main attraction. Resorts offer advantages for groups that include riders and riders as they may offer all-inclusive activities in one convenient place.

Combo/ Multi-Sport Tour

Whether it’s hiking, yoga, cooking, the spa, sightseeing, whitewater rafting, golf, skiing or sunbathing, the combo tour allows riders to combine a variety of interests suitable for a family of riders and non-riders. You may even be able to customize your trip, which is helpful fo people who love to ride, but are not in shape to ride all day, every day, or for groups on corporate retreats.

Women Only Vacations

Girl power never felt so good. Take on new challenges with your female friends, because women only vacations are on the rise. Many ranches now offer Cowgirl Camps and Women-Only Outdoors Programs. If you have a group for a special occasion, many destinations will cater to your needs. All you have to do is ask.

BYOH- Bring Your Own Horse

Want to bring your four-legged friend along for the journey? Bed and Barns allow you and your horse to stay the night and enjoy surrounding trails, great food, and nearby attractions. For those who enjoy camping, check out horse friendly camp sites. People who ride long distances on their horses know that sometimes the kindness of strangers is necessary on a journey. Your night stay could be in someone’s backyard.

Safari on Horseback

Your safari on horseback might take you to South Africa, India or Alberta. Riding horses can make viewing wildlife more feasible, as you can get to destinations that vehicles can’t travel. You may also be able to get closer to the animals without scaring them.

“There are no words.” It’s something we say, in the aftermath of a tragedy, when there’s simply no other way to describe our horror, our sorrow, and our inability to make things better. And it’s something we’re all saying collectively upon learning of the tragic fire that claimed the lives of six horses at Boyd and Silva Martin’s barn at True Prospect Farm this morning.

Not only does Ellen Whitaker have a string of fabulous Grand Prix horses, but she’s got a pretty hot fiance, too. The British showjumper, daughter to Steven Whitaker and niece to Michael and John, has just announced her engagement to fellow-Brit actor Henry Cavill.

Cavill, who you may recognize from the television series “The Tudors,” was originally the top choice for the Edward Cullen role in Twilight, though ultimately bypassed for Robert Pattinson. Looks like his luck is turning around though, having just snagged himself a fantastic horse girl AND the leading role in the upcoming remake of Superman.

Second only to tack cleaning, we think bathing a horse on a sunny day is one of the most gratifying things you can do at the barn.

A whimsical story with charming line drawing illustration,“You’re Different And That’s Super” tells the story of Trumpet, an orphan unicorn in a pasture full of mares and foals who struggles with being different until he learns that what makes him unique is also what makes him special.

We would already love this book for its sweet storyline, but do so even more because it carries the signature spirit and humor of author Carson Kressley, otherwise known as the (hilarious) resident fashion expert on the television series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Kressley, it turns out, has equestrian roots in his native Pennsylvania, where he grew up riding American Saddlebreds and has been competing at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair since he was 15 years old.

Though his career now takes him all over the world, Kressley returns to Pennsylvania each June to compete in saddleseat classes at Devon and act as master of ceremonies for various show events, including the famous Ladies’ Day Hat Parade.

Kressley, who also claims to have ruined many a pair of Gucci loafers at Devon, wrote “You’re Different And That’s Super” to combine his love for horses and interest in promoting diversity. And we think that’s a blue ribbon combination!

We’ve always been partial to vintage horse show posters. And when May rolls around, the festive mood and history surrounding the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair sends us searching for vintage Devon art and memorabilia.

Though many are now sold out (such as our favorite above), you can still find select Devon posters from 1991-2010 for sale on the show’s website. 1993 is awfully sweet…

Each quite special in their own way, we think they’re perfect for guest rooms and tack rooms alike!

Jessica’s making a splash too, it seems, having jointly won the six bar class on May 14 on her horse Vornado Van Den Hoendrik.

Currently playing in London and New York, the National Theater of Great Britain has announced 20 new stops on the US tour of the hit play War Horse.

In addition to Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theater (opening June 13, 2012), performances are also being scheduled in San Francisco, Dallas, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia, as well as other locales.

Ok, maybe he doesn’t “dig” it in that way, but we think it’s very cool nonetheless…

Comedian Stephen Colbert had a little fun with the Emmy award winning PBS show Equitrekking last night when he found out that he’ll be competing against Darley Newman and her beloved series at the 2011 Daytime Emmy Awards.

Nominated for the third consecutive year, this time for Outstanding Special Writing, Equitrekking is up against the popular The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Teen Kids News on Fox and Jon Stewart’s landmark televised rally on Washington, DC’s Mall The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear, which broadcast on Comedy Central.

The episode that garnered this year’s Emmy nod is Equitrekking: Jordan: Wadi Rum, Aqaba & Jerash, in which Darley joins local Bedouin to discover the Middle Eastern Kingdom of Jordan, riding horses through the dramatic Wadi Rum Desert and Dana Village, snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs, hiking Jordan’s version of the Grand Canyon and experiencing NASCAR’s ancient counterpart during chariot races in a restored Roman hippodrome.

We hate to break it to Colbert, but he’s got some serious competition. Horse girls are tough and Darley’s got experience on her side. Equitrekking won an Emmy for Outstanding Single Camera Photography in 2009 and was honored with a nomination for Outstanding Special Class Series in 2009 and 2010.

Following on the heels of a most traditional wedding, the next royal bride-to-be is already bucking the expectations of British high society.

This month, equestrian Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, graces the “girls in pearls” page of England’s Country Life magazine to announce her engagement to rugby star Mike Tindall.

Though she is following in the footsteps of her mother, who posed fo the magazine’s frontspiece in 1971 (above), Zara’s photo is a far cry from the feminine genteel of Country Life’s standard fare.

Pictured by a woodstack with her labrador Storm, Zara is seen wearing a fleece Musto jacket, from the line she designed, and her engagement ring takes a backseat to her prized Rolex.

Isn’t it just like an eventer to show such casual cool? She may be royal but Zara keeps it real and we love her for it!

We swear on our copy of  ”Hunt Seat Equitation” that we’re not out looking for equestrian and equine-themed footwear. But, nonetheless, it finds us again and again.

The latest culprit? How about this high heeled sandal by Reed Krakoff. The cuff is boar hair, but the reader who sent the picture our way swore it looked just like the mane of a Norwegian Fjord. (Thanks, Sheryl!)

Then there’s this black pump with the mane in back – spotted and snapped by Style.com’s Tommy Ton during Paris Fashion Week.

An oldie but goodie, you all went Lady Gaga (as in 790 Facebook “likes!”) for the Tendon Boot Stiletto…

But nobody cared much for the Pony Tail Pump.

Happy birthday, Gucci!

Founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, 2011 marks the 90th anniversary of the Italian fashion and leather goods label and its long association with the equestrian world.

For those who enjoy fashion history, Gucci began using the horsebit as decoration in 1953, on saddle-stitched handbags and their men’s leather loafers. Worn by leading men Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, and even John Wayne, the horsebit loafer later entered the women’s wardrobe in 1963. In 1980, the now iconic loafer was added to the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Throughout the 20th century and extending into Tom Ford’s reign, the horsebit has endured as one of Gucci’s signature lines and has been applied to silk, jewelry, watches, sunglasses, as well as shoes and handbags.

In addition to stylish equestrian design, Gucci has also made high profile reinvestments in its support of equestrian sport, with the Gucci Masters shows in Paris and sponsorship of international riders.

In March, Australian showjumper Edwina Alexander was announced as the face of the brand’s equestrian line and will compete wearing an exclusive Gucci equestrian wardrobe, including clothing and accessories, specially designed for her by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini.

So now that we’ve completed our little history lesson and made you good and jealous of Edwina, are you ready to swoon??

With all the horse films showing up on the big screen recently – Buck, Eddie Macken: True Legend, Water for Elephants, and Spielberg’s War Horse adaptation (later this year) –  we’ve got one you might not have heard of… yet.

Recently named the winner of the World Narrative Competition at the TriBeCa Film Festival, director Lisa Aschan’s debut film “She Monkeys” is a dark and dramatic coming-of-age tale about several young women on a competitive vaulting team in Sweden. Though horses are present in the film, they mostly serve as a backdrop to the competitive tensions and nasty power struggles between the teenage teammates.

We know directors probably loathe these sort of shorthand comparisons, but think “Lord of the Flies” meets “Black Swan” meets “Stick It” - with an equestrian twist. Read the Variety review here.

It’s Kentucky Derby week and, in celebration, PBS is premiering its new film “Thoroughbred: Born to Run.”

Over the course of one year leading up to the 2009 Derby, Academy Award-winning director Paul Wagner examines the diverse people, places, history, and culture of the “Sport of Kings” in the US.

In addition to beautiful bluegrass horse farms, the film also explores the various angles of the horseracing industry, from breeders to gamblers to writers and the always-colorful cast of characters who make up the track’s “backside.”

Look for interesting interviews with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai, Hispanic Hall of Fame Jockey Angel Cordero, early female jockey Patti Barton, and Freddie “Scrapyard” Winston, who remembers the days of segregated track kitchens on the backside.

Of course, equestrian audiences know that, however thrilling the run, racing is not all roses for the horses themselves. We’ll be tuning in to admire the Thoroughbred but also see how Wagner handles these more complex welfare issues of the sport.

Remember MTV’s “The Hills?” Now take the friendships, drama, and privilege and add a backdrop of elite equestrian competition and you’ve got “The A Circuit.”

Co-written by hard-working heiress Georgina Bloomberg and author Cathy Hapka, The A Circuit is the first installment of a new series of teen novels set within the horse show world.

There’s Tommi (the heiress), Kate (the working student), Zara (the party girl), and Fitz (the resident hot guy). Riders, do you recognize this cast of characters? If so, you can probably guess how it’s all going to unravel! But if you’re still curious, you can read the first few pages here.

Geared for a young adult audience, we’re fairly certain “The A Circuit” will have a Twilight-esque following amongst older readers too. (Admittedly, ourselves included.) Let’s just hope the pony kids don’t get their hands on the book quite yet… lest we lose every last shred of innocence the horse world ever had.

We’re all familiar with horses’ fondness for apples, but pairing the equestrian lifestyle with “The Big Apple” may seem a bit far-fetched. Au contraire! Once upon a time, New York City was teeming with horses. Thanks to several neighborhood preservation agencies, there are still vestiges of that bygone era and, if you know where to look, there are plenty “of-the-moment” equestrian elements worth investigating, too. . .

Take In Some Culture

A hit in London, War Horse is the theatrical adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 children’s novel about the horrors of World War I as seen through the eyes of a horse that has been separated from his loving owner and shipped off to the battlefields of France.  Critics praised the lifelike equine puppets, created by Handspring Puppet Company in South Africa.  The show will be setting up shop in Los Angeles in June 2012, so catch it at Lincoln Center while you can. Steven Spielberg’s film version is due out in December.

Shop Like a New Yorker

Where do international visitors and New Yorkers alike shop for equestrian gear? Manhattan Saddlery - NYC’s only tack store! This large, multi-level store carries everything a rider could need and will take custom orders, and for the many international tourists who visit the city, this is the only place to pick up equine supplies on their visit to the states. Be sure to check out the vintage carousel horses on display.

Bedding Down

Marjorie Colt’s (yes, really her last name!) homey West Village Bed and Breakfast townhouse at 83 Horatio Street is the perfect hideaway to call home during your equestrian stay. The building used to have a stable in the rear and the arched entryway to the horsewalk (an alley that runs the length of the house through which former residents entered with their horses) is still visible from the sidewalk. Across the street is 72 Horatio, the site of another former stable – a marble horsehead peers down from three stories up.  Knowing that Sarah Jessica Parker, Mathew Broderick, Julianne Moore and many other celebrities live nearby can make wandering the ‘hood a star-sighting adventure.

Two Dylans Can’t be Wrong

Also in the West Village, at the corner of Hudson and West 11^th Streets sits the historic White Horse Tavern, where Welsh-born poet/writer Dylan Thomas and beat songwriter Bob Dylan were regulars (not at the same time, of course). Established in 1880, the tavern is one of the few remaining watering holes from the era, the windows of which are decorated with an ever-growing assortment of eclectic white horse statues.

NYPD Blues (and Bays and Roans. . .)

The TriBeCa neighborhood (Triangle Below Canal) boasts some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Tucked into this tony nabe near an exitway of the Holland Tunnel is one of the few remaining mounted police units in the country: the NYPD First Precinct. On the west side of Varick Street, just south of Ericsson Place, is a bright blue door through which many of New York’s finest (by which we mean horses!) reside. There’s also a turnout arena on a pier on the Hudson River at 36^th Street, not far from the Circle Line sightseeing cruise dock.

Where to Ride in NYC

The Bridle Path in Central Park was, for many years, the only place where one could ride in Manhattan. It was a strange and wondrous sight to see horse and rider with the towers of Fifth Avenue and Central Park West looming in the distance. The closing of the historic Claremont Riding Academy in 2007 was a sad day, but, in 2010, the Central Park Conservancy began rebuilding a new stable near the the southern side of the Central Park zoo. Built to restore an equine presence in Central Park, the red-brick five-stall barn will house mounted patrol horses and perhaps, planners say, pave the way for the return of a privately run riding stable to the park. Visitors hoping to ride can still find horses for rent in the outer boroughs.

Central Park Carriage Horses

For many out-of-towners, the romantic idea of a horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park is too hard to resist. However, several organizations are working to raise awareness about the often dangerous conditions in which these horses must work and the cramped Hell’s Kitchen stables where they live. Please think twice and do your homework before supporting this industry.

A reader turned us on to the gorgeous photography of  NYC native Bonnie Edelman and her new book of equine fine art photos “Sermo Per Equus.”

After working as an art director for Seventeen, MTV, and Glamour – as well as traveling the globe as editor of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue(!) - Bonnie turned her attention to creating photos of her own, including fine art portraiture and this stunning book of horse photos.

Margaret Russell, editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest, calls “Sermo Per Equus” “truly sublime” and images from the book have been featured at New York City’s Design Within Reach and in their retail catalog.

Ever wonder how good riders get good? Or what’s holding you back, really, from achieving your own riding goals?

In his new book, “How Good Riders Get Good” (Trafalgar Square), USEA hall of famer Denny Emerson provides a refreshing aid for any equestrian – at any level –  who’s really willing to take a hard look in the mirror and set the wheels in motion to achieve their own version of success.

“Wannabes vs. Gonnabes”

Emerson begins by asking simply “Are you a ‘Wannabe’ or a ‘Gonnabe’?” Gonnabes, he posits, get good not through luck or privilege but a dedication to daily choices that lead to success. The book then leads the reader through seven broad areas of choice – from selecting a discipline to character traits to family choices –  that separate those who get it done from those stuck in “wannabe” mode.

Readers, we’re not going to lie. If you’re willing to be honest, and check those excuses at the door, this book might have some uncomfortable spots. Life is comprised of choices as well as situations out of our control. But Emerson manages to create an equestrian text that allows a realistic evaluation of one’s riding “path” coupled with a useful framework for alignment towards future success.

A Good Read

Throughout, “How Good Riders Get Good” is an interesting read, peppered with Emerson’s own riding history as well as short, inspiring profiles on “good” riders from a variety of disciplines – including Mary King (eventing), Laura Kraut (showjumping), Clinton Anderson (natural horsemanship), Sandy Collier (reining), Larry Poulin (carriage driving), Courtney King Dye (dressage), and more.

Denny Emerson will be signing books at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, Saturday April 30, during the lunch break at the Bit of Britain booth.
