Sonora Carver at New Jersey's Steel Pier

Forget the Hollywood version, get the real story from the original diving horse rider herself. According to the Press of Atlantic City, the tourism board has just voted to bring back the legendary horse diving acts to the Steel Pier as part of a $20M Tourism District Master Plan.  A Girl and Five Brave Horses is the autobiography of Sonora Carver, the daring young equestrian and “diving horse girl” of the Steel Pier, about whom the popular film “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” was based.

Great post. The movie is "Wild Hearts Can't be Broken" though :)

Oh my you are correct - that's what happens when the blogger fingers start flying in the heat of passion! Corrected :)

I think this would be great to see. I love adveture and thrills. Takes a brave team. The movie is great. It's ashame she went blind. But she had great courage to keep moving on.

Hi Corinna - Thanks for your comment and the link in the your post. Very disturbing, I agree!

my goodness, I get nervous just looking at the photo, I don't think I would be able to watch a live show! The welfare debate is already swirling like crazy- I linked back here and discussed it a little in my most recent post. Thanks for sharing!

Regardless of what one's feelings are about PETA, they really work to protect our animal friends from stupid entertainment concepts like this. They already have their "Animals in Entertainment" investigative department on top of this. I'm sure other groups will be fighting this also.

We'll keep our eyes peeled for more info about this. My suspicion is it won't ever make it to fruition. Won't be the first time a government body made a decision without thinking...

Good movie but I do not think it is a good idea to bring this back it is very dangerous for both rider and horse and yea I know racing and other events are dangerous but they still involve behavior that horses do naturally jumping from a high level into a small swimming pool is not something horses do unless maybe being chased by a predator

This is horrifying! I had a hard time with the movie and I knew it wasn't real!

Why? I thought we had progressed as far as animal rights and humane treatment.

Terrible and abusive pursuit. Aren't our equine partners generous enough?

I agree - just can't imagine that in this day in age it will be allowed to happen. I hope not.
