Standout Winter Riding Jackets
Because riders spend much of their time outdoors in the elements and engage in a high output, stop-start athletic activity, we think the top four essentials of a winter riding jacket are: windproofing, waterproofing, breathability, and movement.
What else? We vote for durable construction (we’re willing to pay for something that will work for us year in and year out,) a dirt/hair/hay/shaving repellant fabric, and a detachable hood.
Sound like too much to ask for? Not for our two standout winter riding jackets, featured here, both of which do all these things and more. The added bonus? Flattering, streamlined shapes that eschew the Michelin-man silhouette that winter riders know all too well. Want more details?
The Mountain Horse Winnipeg is an update to their “Original” winter jacket, a cold weather workhorse and rider favorite for years. With the Winnipeg, the fabric and fit both get a twist. The already slimming shape can be further accentuated with the adjustable, elastic waist strap and the slick, shiny polyester face does a great job shedding dirt. Our other favorite features include the pre-bent elbow sleeves, reflective trim detailing, and cozy faux fur lining.
It’s the ingenious belted design that put the Kerrits Cargo Jacket on the map, but make no mistake, this is a serious winter riding jacket. With pit zips, storm flaps, and adjustable hip and wrist zippers, we know a lot of riders’ whose Cargo does fashionable double duty on the slopes. The detachable hood fits over a helmet and belt height can be adjusted for a customized fit.
