Show Shirts as Casual Wear blog Show Shirts as Casual Wear?Struggling with packing for WEG? If recorded average temperatures can be relied on as an indicator, expect warm (not uber hot) days and cooler nights. But, of course, weather is notoriously unpredictable, especially when major equestrian events are involved, so we recommend playing it safe and allowing for layering.

For cool, comfortable equestrian style, why not pack a couple of your favorite show shirts and give them a new spin as travel/casual wear? We typically wear ours with the collar undone and sleeves rolled up, paired with jeans or tailored walking-length shorts and a classic belt.

Our favorites include the Silk Touch Show Shirt by FITS, which has the benefit of a fabulous stretch fabric, under-arm ventilation, and a long tail that always stays tucked in.

For something a bit more dressed up, we love the show shirts from Stable Cloth, a line of custom and private collection show apparel by rider and entrepreneur Erin Burpee Hornung. Stable Cloth’s shirts are anything but standard, combining traditional shirt colors with unexpected details and trim. Impeccable hand-tailoring give them a touch of elegance, even when worn as casual wear.

The best part about the “show shirt as casual wear” trend is that you might discover a fabulous new outfit without purchasing anything new. Or, if you do make a purchase, you can get more mileage out of it than just one-day-per-horse-show several times a year.

Like we always say, equestrians like our style to have a practical side as well!

Funny, but whenever I go back to KY, I never seem to pack the right clothes for the current temperature. No matter how closely I monitor weather reports online.
I’ve had to buy winter jackets while I was in KY – even though I had some perfectly good jackets back home in New England!
Expect a range from 40 to 80, especially late in September and early October. Really. And the weather can change in a snap. And then change back. Or not.
One year, I went in late-September. Eighty and humid one day, 45 and raining (okay. Still humid) the next. Then, it was cold, dry and crisp.
So, pack layers. Don’t be shocked if you have to go pick up a sweatshirt somewhere. Or realize you wish you didn’t have that hoodie as the temperature rises during the day. :) And keep in mind that a day could easily include rain, so pack a rain jacket, too.
Sorry to sound like your mother all cranky because she’s without sufficient coffee or “special beer juice.” But weather in KY can be unpredictable. That’s the surest bet in town.

I love the idea of using show shirts as casual shirts, I think I’m going to try it! The paisley trim shirts would be great for this , there are nice, affordable ones at All After Tack. Thanks for the idea!
