Riding Ireland

Riding Ireland Riding Ireland Castle to castle, inn to inn… the dream of horseback riding in Ireland has to be one of every equestrian’s top travel fantasies.

Well conditioned riders will appreciate the 4-5 hours per day of mixed riding offered at McGarry’s Riding Center, owned and operated by former Irish showjumping team member Declan McGarry. Situated near Sligo City, on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, McGarry offers tours of what is thought to be the first settled area in all of Ireland; the region boasts Megalithic tombs, some as far back as 3500 B.C.

On McGarry’s Atlantic Coast to Markree Castle Trail, riders explore the ancient burial chambers, a restored castle, local pubs, and the famous seaweed baths in Strandhill during the course of their five day tour. The horses available are Irish hunters and Connemara ponies. Accommodations are provided by the ultra-modern Sligo Glasshouse hotel, situated on the Garavogue River. Guests my also arrange a stay at the stunning Markree castle.

For the equestrian overachiever not content with exploring the region’s beautiful scenery and history on horseback, McGarry offers showjumping instruction as well.

I did this ride in July 2009 with 5 other riding friends from the same barn– since the trip we call ourselves ‘the irish girls’–though girls is a loose term! We ranged in age from 18 to 63 and had a blast!—–it was amazing!! I highly recommend it to avid travelers and well schooled equestrians–the ride is fun, fast and the scenery is amazing throughout this trip!!
