For 25 years, the name Blackburn Architects (San Francisco and Washington, D.C.) has been synonymous with high-end, custom building design for the most prestigious private farms, estates, and equestrian centers in the U.S.
Now, for the rest of us, the firm’s new venture, Blackburn greenbarns, is providing an exciting alternative to cost-prohibitive and time-consuming fully custom barn design. The four Blackburn greenbarns packages – ranging from 4-24 stall structures – combine the best of Blackburn’s award-winning functionality and aesthetic with a priority on sustainable, eco-friendly design.
Each of the barn options utilize green systems, like greywater harvesting, and design principles such as solar energy and upward vertical ventilation. The barns also incorporate recycled materials (eg. concrete and rubber), low VOC stains and sealants (no harmful offgassing), and FSC certified wood. The greenbarn packages offer services ranging from “Just the Plans” to “Turnkey,” with a varying level of involvement and interaction at each level.
Having lived through the design and construction of a large boarding and training facility, we think this firm’s enormous experience with the process of equestrian design and construction is a huge value alone. Whether you are thinking about building a new barn or just interested in learning more about green building, we recommend taking a look at Blackburn greenbarns.

Al and Nancy Jubitz, of Portland Oregon, have done an amazing job on their farm. French Hill is, I believe, 100% solar powered if not 100% I know it is close. They have worked so hard to accomplish this, my hats off to them!
