Social Media, Explained

Needless to say, when talking about Dappled Grey, I get the question a lot: "What IS social media, anyway?" You'll understand, then, why I was very excited when Mashable's marketing director Marta Kagan put together this engaging and convincing case for social media that is viewable in about TWO MINUTES. (Way better than a 250 page Master's thesis, eh?) Thanks, Marta!

An old friend and I recently remarked on a similar theme across our two very different career paths – always being slightly ahead of the curve of our markets, no matter what industry we are working in. We agreed it's both exciting and a challenge to continuously find yourself in the position of helping people understand and employ new, creative, and hopefully improved, ways of doing things.

Reason being, change is hard, and some individuals just seem to embrace new ideas more easily than others. For my Master's thesis, I provided guidance to one of the nation's largest urban school districts on innovative alternatives to decades old programs for new teacher recruitment, hiring, and placement. These days, I'm helping sport horse businesses take on new, conversation-based methods of marketing on the web. In both cases, my audience has struggled with the new language and new risks associated with a new way of doing things.
